On December 11, 2022, the Canada Structural Engineers Association (CSEA) held its year-end luncheon event at the Mandarin restaurant in Markham, the event was attended by over 60 members and guests of the organization, including engineers, consultants, contractors, and other industry professionals.
The event began with a warm welcome from CSEA President Haixue Liao, who highlighted the association's successes over the past year and thanked members for their contributions and support. He also noted the importance of events like this by providing opportunities for members to come together, share their knowledge and experience, and learn from industry experts.
Following the welcome message, representatives from each of the CSEA's working committees gave year-end summaries of their work from 2022. These updates covered a wide range of topics, including building codes and standards, professional development, and industry outreach. The summaries showcased the committees dedication and hard work to improve and enhance the structural engineering profession.
The highlight of the event was two technical presentations by guest speakers Neil Brockman of Lea Consulting and Sheng Wang of Ontario Power Generation (OPG). Brockman, who has over 20 years of experience in bridge engineering, provided a detailed overview of the career opportunities in this field. He shared insights on the challenges and rewards of working on bridge projects, as well as the skills and qualifications required to succeed in this field. His presentation was well-received by the audience and sparked lively discussions.
Wang from OPG discussed the development opportunities of the Ontario electricity system. He presented updates on Ontario's electricity market reform, which is designed to modernize the province's electricity system, improve affordability, and enhance system reliability. He also discussed the future of renewable energy and the challenges and opportunities it presents for the structural engineering profession. The members were impressed by the insights shared by the speaker and were excited to learn more about developments in the field of electricity systems.
After lunch, a lucky draw was held, with prizes such as water bottles, hats and T-shirts provided by the event's sponsors. This was a fun-filled session and all attendees enjoyed the opportunity to win prizes.
