CSEA Summer Picnic 2024

Reported by Jody Liao

The annual CSEA Summer Picnic is an event to bring together around 100 attendees, consisting of structural engineers from government agencies and consultants, Engineer-in-training participants,  students from across Canada and other professionals who has interests in structural engineering. The engineers of the CSEA association, to share lasting memories, networking opportunities, and most importantly have fun, all aimed at strengthening the structural engineering community.

The CSEA Summer Picnic took place on Sunday, September 1st, 2024, at Lakefront Promenade Park in Mississauga. With scenic views of Lake Ontario, boats, and the surrounding pathways, the venue provided a picturesque setting for the event.

After the contest and awards ceremony, Haixue Liao delivered an opening speech, marking the official start to the picnic which spanned from 12:30 pm to 1:15 pm. Our picnic had a variety of food options, including authentic Chinese dishes like spring rolls, sushi, fried rice,  noodles and especially whole roast baby pig, along with several pizza choices and drinks to wash down the tasty food.

Once attendees had enjoyed the abundance of food, the games commenced. The initial game, known as the "Balloons Relay Race," was underway. Participants stood back-to-back, grasping balloons as they embarked on the race. Subsequently, a more demanding game was introduced, requiring the participation of five individuals from each group. In this game, participants formed a line with balloons positioned between them. The team that completed this challenge in the shortest time emerged victorious. The games were a source of great enjoyment for all who participated in the game, and excitement for those spectating.

The second game was tug of war. The tug of war sparked fierce competition as two teams gripped a thick rope, pulling with all their strength to drag the other across the line. Spectators cheered as the rope swayed back and forth, tension high. With one final heave, a team surged forward, sending the opponents stumbling. Both games, filled with excitement and laughter, were thoroughly enjoyed by participants and spectators alike, creating a vibrant atmosphere, perfect to end the summer.
